Columbia is a rural community located approximately 12 miles south of St. Louis. It is home to about 10,000 residents. It is best known for its golf courses and historical one-room schoolhouses.
Columbia offers four excellent golf venues: the Columbia Bridges Golf Course, the Columbia Golf Club, Fairfield Golf Club, and River Lakes Golf Course. There are also recreational opportunities in several other sports leagues available to children and adults.
Columbia is recognized as a “Playful City USA” for its youth recreational programs and children’s playgrounds.
Community pride is reflected in the loving restoration and re-purposing of historical one-room school houses: Shoemaker School and Sand Bank School. Sand Bank School is available for rent for private parties and gatherings. It is also used for educational tours.
Columbia has several community parks offering sports fields, tennis courts, picnic areas, walking trails and pavilions. The Columbia Public Library is a modern facility with both print and multi-media materials.
The historic Main Street of Columbia is a popular walking route for residents and visitors. A favorite pizza restaurant among locals, Joe Boccardi’s, is also located on Main Street.
Columbia is commuter-friendly, with easy access to South County and south St. Louis via the Jefferson Barrack Bridge. The bridge is located within 1 mile of the city limits.
Quality medical care is available at eight major hospitals within a 25-mile area of Columbus. Memorial Hospital in nearby Belleville is rated in the top 5% in the nation for emergency care.
Senior services in Columbia include social opportunities, activities, wellness programs and meals.
Public education is managed by Columbia Community School District #4. The district includes about 2,000 students who attend the following schools: Eagleview Elementary, Parkview School, Columbia Middle School and Columbia High School.
Higher education is available through Southwestern Illinois College.
